I took my 2003 Acura to the nearest Firestone for a dysfunctional headlight. They said that the head lamp and the ignitor for the headlight needs to be replaced.

They said that the cost of the headlamp is $168 (which seemed expensive) and the ignitor $650!!!! They said that those parts can only be acquired from the Acura dealer. I believed in them and asked them to proceed even though i exited in disbelief. In the next hour i called other auto repair shops and when i mentioned about the Firestone quote, they laughed and basically said that it is insane!

I called Acura to inquire about the part and the ignitor is just $250. I called Firestone and canceled the service. They already replaced the bulb by that time and I ended up paying $278 including the labor. I asked for the purchase receipt for the bulb.

They replied saying that it is internal and they deal with the auto parts guys internally.

I also observed that in my previous visits they tend to suggest more repairs than needed. I would never go back!

This is really how you learn. You should always trust your instinct.

It sounded high when you were quoted the price and you should have stopped right there and called a dealer. However, this is how you learn. I don't understand why you or anyone would go to a Firestone store for repairs of any kind on an automobile. My first place to go would have been to my local mechanic whom I trust or to the dealer for something like this.

Or, most likely, I would have just bought the headlight from an auto parts store and put it in myself. In any event, chalk it up as a lesson learned and get on with it.

We all make mistakes. And, from now on question everything.
